Cyber Security Forum 2011 - Conference Report Published
Includes Reflections on the new UK Government Cyber Security Strategy from the Cambridge Cyber Defence Project

The conference report is now available along with a set of recommendations. The report also includes some reflections written by the Cyber Defence Project at Cambridge University on the new UK Cyber Security Strategy: Protecting and Promoting the UK in a Digital World. Background to the Conference
Cyber Security benefits the economy by protecting national infrastructure, businesses, IP and personal data - those companies that take cyber security seriously will gain competitive advantage. The Cyber domain also presents a wider strategic opportunity to Britain's economy and businesses in terms of R&D, innovation, new products and services, education and skills, and global leadership:

"As a nation, seeking economic advantage, we will also achieve a significant boost to our prosperity if we can position the UK as the nation of choice for conducting business in cyberspace and a cyber centre of excellence for skills, technology and knowledge."
Jonathan Hoyle - Director General Information Security & Assurance, GCHQ

The challenge laid down is not simply for government – the private sector and academia have a very important role to play. This is "as much the concern of the board-room as the Cabinet room" commented Cabinet Minister Rt Hon Francis Maude MP in June 2011.

Main Conference Themes, Structure and Audience
On 29 September 2011, the Cyber Security Forum 2011 explored a broad range of these Cyber themes with a strong focus on business, the private sector and partnerships with academia and government.

The day was divided into two sessions: the first exploring cyber security's role in protecting the UK economy from attack; the second positioning the UK as a cyber centre of excellence. Please consult the agenda on this site and the report via the link above.

Aims and Outcomes
The meeting was held in association with the Rustat Conferences of Jesus College, Cambridge whose Cyber Security conference in February 2011 took an inventory of the main issues with the participation of the University of Cambridge and Silicon Fen partners, both well positioned to contribute innovative ideas and solutions to this growing security and economic dilemma. The conference allowed a larger group from industry and government to participate, discussing a wider range of important topics. In 2012 the Cyber Security Forum will reconvene bringing up to date the discussions held in 2011 and focusing the attention on the most vital and current issues of concern to industry, government and research.
